As part of UC3M India Week, this workshop offers a practical introduction to two of the most recognizable forms of popular dance from the Indian subcontinent: Bhangra and Bollywood.
Through movement, rhythm, and physical expression, this session will introduce participants to two very different styles that are united by their energy, their collective nature, and their strong celebratory element.
Bhangra
Bhangra is a form of music and dance originating in the Punjab region, in northern India and Pakistan. Its development is linked to ancient regional dances and agricultural celebrations associated with the arrival of spring and the harvest. Over time, it has become one of the most recognizable forms of folk dance in the Punjab and remains a prominent feature of celebrations, festivals, and weddings.
The workshop will offer an introduction to its characteristic movements, its rhythmic energy, and its festive atmosphere.

Jasvinder Singh
Bollywood
The term ” Bollywood,” a portmanteau of “Bombay” and “Hollywood,” refers to the Hindi-language film industry based in Mumbai and, by extension, to the dance style popularized through its productions.
Bollywood dance is characterized by its dynamism, its vibrancy, and its narrative quality. It is an eclectic and constantly evolving choreographic language that blends elements from India’s classical and traditional dances, regional folk rhythms, and contemporary Western styles such as jazz, pop, and hip-hop.
One of its key features is its expressive dimension: the choreographies focus not only on body movement and rhythm, but also on hand gestures and facial expressions—elements that help convey emotions and develop the narrative dimension of each piece.
The workshop will provide participants with hands-on experience with these elements and help them discover how movement, gesture, rhythm, and expression come together to form the theatrical language of Bollywood.
