Frame by frame: handcrafted stop-motion animation

This workshop is a theoretical and practical exploration of stop-motion animation, with a special focus on working with paper and the creative use of the technique. It will focus on collage animation, cut-outs, rotoscoping, animation using everyday objects, and pixilation, with an emphasis on hands-on, craft-based work.

Program
  1. Workshop Overview. Introduction to stop motion: principles, history, and techniques. Digital tools and course materials. First exercise using cut-outs.
  2. In this session, we’ll propose creating a short collective piece, which will serve as the basis for the exercises we’ll do from now on. We’ll develop a simple script and work plan. Next, we’ll do a collage animation exercise using all kinds of found materials: newspapers, books, magazines, paper, fabric, and objects. We’ll learn the basics of collage and its history, look at examples, and create a collage animation using materials provided by the instructor and the students.
  3. Rotoscoping is an animation technique that involves tracing or modifying frames from live-action video clips. In this session, we’ll learn about the history and principles of the technique, and we’ll put some variations of hand-drawn rotoscoping into practice.
  4. This session will focus on stop-motion animation and object animation. Stop-motion animation involves animating people. In this session, we’ll learn how to create stop-motion animations and we’ll also make animations using everyday objects.
  5. Building on the exercises we’ve done so far and adding whatever we deem necessary, we’ll use this session to finish the collaborative film that incorporates everything we’ve learned. We’ll shoot the remaining segments, edit the film, and add sound.

Elena Duque

Elena Duque, a Venezuelan-Hispanic filmmaker, programmer, writer, and educator, works across the fields of animation and collage, incorporating analog formats and working methods to explore themes such as identity and a sense of belonging through visual exercises centered on places, objects, and textures.
