National premiere of this hybrid project—a blend of documentary installation, film, and performance—created by Flor Firvida Martin (Mexico) and Simona Deaconescu (Romania), a choreographic and audiovisual exploration of the bodies, emotions, and working conditions of women in Mexico and Romania.The project offers a dialogic perspective on the experiences of women in Eastern Europe and Latin America, highlighting the intersections and differences that shape their bodies and their ways of working.
“Women at Work: Crossroads, Rhythms, and Continuities” is a documentary video installation that explores the working realities of eleven women from Mexico City and Bucharest from a physical, choreographic, and cinematic perspective.
Created by choreographer and researcher Flor Firvida Martin (Mexico/Argentina) and choreographer and filmmaker Simona Deaconescu (Romania), the project offers a dialogic perspective on the experiences of women in Eastern Europe and Latin America, highlighting the intersections and differences that shape their bodies and their ways of working.
The protagonists are: a twerk dancer and social worker, a sculptor, a professional basketball player, a performance and bondage artist, a healer and doula, a wrestler, a transgender seamstress and cook, a therapist and sex worker, an advocate for the rights of people with visual impairments, a glass factory worker, a pole dancer, and a contemporary dancer. Through their voices and gestures, stories about working conditions, violence, desires, affections, and acts of resistance are woven together, forming a living archive of women’s economies and the choreographies of their work.
Artists:
Flor Firvida Martin (Argentina/Mexico) is an artist-researcher, choreographer, and performer. Her work explores the relationships between the body, territory, and community, combining choreography, performance, video, and social research methodologies. She has presented her work at ExTeresa Arte Actual, Danza UNAM, and HEI (United Kingdom), among others. A recipient of grants from AFCN, the Cantemir Program, FONCA, CONACYT, and Becar Cultura, she is co-director of CUICLi Residencias Colectivas (Mexico City) and a faculty member of the LIMINAL certificate program (UANL). Her most recent project, *Women at Work: Crossroads, Rhythms, and Continuities, connects bodily and labor narratives of women in Latin America and Eastern Europe.
Simona Deaconescu (Romania) is a choreographer and filmmaker whose transdisciplinary work examines social constructs by combining fiction and documentary realism. Founder of the Tangaj Collective and former artistic director of the Bucharest International Dance Film Festival, she integrates movement, image, and technology to expand the notion of choreography beyond the human body. A recipient of an award from the National Dance Center in Bucharest and twice recognized as an Aerowaves Artist, she has presented her work in Europe, the Americas, and Africa. Her most recent projects explore critical and speculative perspectives on the body in contemporary society.
