• 7:50 p.m . • Presentation of the open call for the new Open Forum of the Madrid node of the RedACTS network on the performing arts and new technologies, in collaboration with the European project DIGITAL ON STAGE

Synopsis of the play:
Restless legs syndrome is characterized by an unpleasant sensation in the lower limbs that creates an irresistible urge to move the legs. It particularly affects moments of rest, such as sleep. To diagnose the condition, overnight electromyograms are used to study leg movements and muscle tension. This performance seeks to connect three of these concepts: restlessness, sleep, and muscle tension.
The piece works by transforming brainwave recordings into sound. The waves from electroencephalograms taken during sleep can be understood as a continuous signal and can therefore be transformed into sound. Using them, it is possible to create a musical composition for each stage of sleep.
In addition, we have created an interactive system using MAX MSP and an electromyogram sensor that takes live measurements of the muscle tension in the dancer’s legs, so that the sonification of the leg tension is transformed into music in real time. The dancer’s performance and body thus influence the sound that reflects the phases of sleep. The concept of interactivity between body and sound refers to the disruption of rest experienced by people living with this syndrome, as this physical sensation constantly interferes with their rest.
Finally, while we are aware that we do not suffer the terrible consequences that afflict people with this syndrome—and we do not wish to trivialize anyone’s suffering—we propose a broad understanding of the concept of restlessness. We live in a turbo-capitalist society that encourages and rewards constant activity and productivity. With a broad concept that can foster empathy in people who do not have this syndrome, we believe that this artwork can serve as a bridge—through art—to this neurological condition.
