BP UC3M In-House Tournament

The Debate Society, in collaboration with the University, is organizing the 1st Internal Debate Tournament using the British Parliamentary (BP) format. This academic and competitive initiative was created with the purpose of fostering critical thinking, public speaking, and the constructive exchange of ideas within our debate community The British Parliamentary format not only assesses eloquence but also promotes a range of cross-cutting skills essential for professional and civic development:

  • Critical Thinking and Flexibility: Positions (for or against) are assigned at random minutes before the debate, which forces participants to analyze reality from multiple perspectives and to exercise intellectual empathy.
  • Ability to synthesize information and mental agility: With only 15 minutes of preparation and no access to electronic devices, debaters must construct coherent, well-reasoned, and persuasive arguments under pressure.
  • Collaborative and Strategic Work: The debate takes place in pairs, which requires perfect coordination, mutual trust, and the development of a joint, synergistic argumentative strategy.
  • Rigor and intellectual respect: We foster a space for debate based on evidence, logical argumentation, and respectful rebuttal, steering clear of polarization and personal attacks.
Resolutions
  • Practical learning environment: Create a safe, constructive, and competitive simulation environment where error analysis and technical feedback are an essential part of the learning process.
  • Advanced Training: Introduce and explore in depth the dynamics, strategies, and structures of the format BPformat—the methodological standard for the most prestigious international competitions.
  • Institutional Outreach: Identify talented university students and build debate teams that are well-prepared, competitive, and capable of representing our institution in the various academic tournaments on the circuit.
Registration
  • The 1st BP UC3M In-House Tournament will be held on November 19 and 20, 2026.
  • Registration will be open from October 1 through November 6, 2026.
  • Once you have registered, the Debate Society’s leadership will contact you to form pairs based on your interests.

Regulations

The tournament will be conducted strictly in accordance with international standards of the British Parliamentary (BP), adapted to the internal structure of our Debate Society to ensure balanced learning and high-level competition. The tournament will consist of four phases:

  • 1. Qualifying Phase (General Rounds) This initial stage will consist of four qualifying rounds in which all registered teams will participate. In each debate, the pairs will accumulate points in descending order (3, 2, 1, or 0 points), assigned based on the ranking determined after the jury’s deliberation at their respective table.
  • 2. System of Break (Advance to the Final Phase) Once the preliminary rounds are complete and the standings are finalized, the top eight teams in the overall standings will advance past the tournament’s technical cut—formally known on the circuit as the Break of the tournament—and qualify for the knockout rounds.
  • 3. Knockout Stage (Semifinals and Grand Final) The eight qualifying teams will be divided into two simultaneous semifinals, each consisting of four teams. To ensure fairness and competitive integrity, the assignment of venues will be determined by a draw based on the scores from the preliminary round. The top two teams from each semifinal will advance directly to the Grand Final.
  • 4. Judging Criteria (Panel of Judges) The rounds will be evaluated by a team of accredited judges. To ensure maximum transparency, the official evaluation rubric and detailed judging criteria will be published here and shared with participants in a timely manner before the start of the tournament.
Topic

One of the most demanding and dynamic features of the British Parliamentary format is that the debate topics (motions) are not known in advance. This ensures spontaneity, quick thinking, and a level playing field for all teams. The process of revealing and preparing for the debate will follow this strict protocol:

  • Revealing the Topic: At the start of each round, the organizers will display the motion in the common room simultaneously for all participants.
  • The 15-Minute Preparation Period: From the exact moment the topic is revealed, teams have only 15 minutes to analyze the topic, define their strategy, and structure their arguments as a group.
  • Digital Detox: During this preparation period, the use of the internet, cell phones, computers, or any external aids is strictly prohibited. Teams may rely only on their own knowledge, blank sheets of paper, and pens.
  • Various Topics: The motions will cover areas of great global relevance and current interest, such as geopolitics, economics, ethics, technology, culture, and international relations.

Note for beginners: Not knowing the topic in advance may seem like a major challenge, but it’s the very essence of the format. The test doesn’t evaluate who memorizes the most facts at home, but rather who demonstrates the greatest capacity for analysis, logic, and structured argumentation under pressure.

Classrooms and Schedules

The tournament will take place on the Getafe Campus. The specific classroom assignments, as well as the detailed schedule for the competition, will be announced well in advance.

The winning pair will represent the University in one of the BP tournaments on the national circuit, which includes coverage of any travel expenses, lodging, and meals if the event is held outside Madrid, as well as the registration fee in any case.

Certificates will be awarded to the winning pair and the runner-up pair, as well as to those who finish in the top 5 of the individual public speaking rankings.
